Custom Software & App Development
Off-the-shelf software makes you work its way. I build software that works yours. Custom apps, automation, and controls for your business, from one person who owns the whole thing start to finish.
Start a ConversationThe Tool You Need Might Not Exist Yet
Here is what I see over and over. A business runs on five different subscriptions, and each one does about 80% of what you actually need, so your team spends its day copying things between them by hand. Or there is a job that should be one button, and instead it is ten careful steps that break the moment the person who knows them is on vacation. Or you went looking for software that fits how you work, and everything out there wanted you to change how you work to fit it.
It does not have to be that way. When software is built around your business instead of the other way around, the friction just disappears. The ten steps become one button. The thing only one person knew how to do now runs on its own. The tool finally fits the hand.
That is what I do. I have spent over 20 years in IT and commercial technology, and I build custom software for businesses that need something real, something that fits, and something they actually own.
A Real Example: A Harley-Davidson Dealership
Giant LED video walls, controlled from a phone by staff with zero technical background
Bartels' Harley-Davidson in Los Angeles has two massive LED video walls, one facing the showroom and one facing the street. They needed any staff member to change what plays, right from their phone, with no training and nothing to install. The wall could never go dark, and the owner did not want to call a technician every time they wanted a different video up.
So I built them a custom control app. Staff open a link on their phone, pick the videos they want, set how many times each one plays, and hit go. It loops on its own, all day, and survives a power outage without anyone touching it. New videos are added by simply dropping them in a folder.
The whole thing runs on a small computer at the wall, needs no internet to keep playing, and I maintain and update it remotely from the Bay Area. The dealership just taps a phone. That is the point.
A Closer Look at the App
The tool the dealership's staff actually use, every day, from their phones
- Pick any videos, in any order, right from a phone. Tap the ones you want and they play, as simple as that.
- Decide how many times each clip plays before it moves to the next, so the important ones get more airtime.
- See what is on the wall right now, with a live countdown and the full loop time, at a glance.
- Works on any phone, tablet, or computer. It opens in the browser. No app store, nothing to download, nothing to set up per device.
- Add new videos by dropping them in a folder. They show up in the app on their own, sorted into tidy categories.
- Loops all day and comes back after a power cut, with nobody touching it. A storefront wall that never goes dark.
Under the Hood
Hardware to software, designed and built as one thing
This was not a template I filled in. I designed and built the whole system, the computer that sits at the wall and the software that runs on it, so the two fit together perfectly. Here is what is actually under the hood.
The Brain at the Wall
A compact, silent mini PC (a Beelink) mounted right at the display. It boots straight into the video loop, needs no internet to keep playing, and powers back on by itself after an outage.
The Control App
A web app I wrote from scratch, so any phone on the network runs it with nothing to install. The friendly screen the staff tap is the easy half. The engine behind it does the real work.
The Engine
A Python backend driving a professional media player on Linux. It holds the playlist, drives the wall over HDMI, and remembers its state so a power cut never loses your setup.
Remote Management
A private, secure connection lets me update, fix, and load new content from the Bay Area, even though the wall is in Los Angeles. No flight, no service call.
That is the whole point of building it custom: every piece was chosen and written to work together, by the one person who stands behind all of it.
What It Took to Build It
The short version of turning a bare mini PC into something a business can depend on
The actual media box that drives the wall, smaller than a lunchbox, shown powered on and wired in.
- Started bare and stripped it clean. Off came the stock Windows the box shipped with. On went Debian Linux, a lean, rock-solid foundation that runs for months untouched, with nothing on it that does not need to be there.
- Made it boot straight into the wall. No desktop, no login screen, no clutter. You give it power and it is already playing, like an appliance, not a computer.
- Wrote the app and the engine, then wired them together, so a tap on a phone becomes a change on the wall in an instant.
- Made it survive the real world. Pull the plug and it comes right back on its own. Lose internet and it keeps playing from its own storage. I proved it by yanking the power over and over until it passed every time.
- Locked it down, so it cannot be fiddled with or knocked out of fullscreen, and set up a secure private door so I can manage it from hundreds of miles away.
- Added a simple drop folder, so staff add new videos just by copying them over, and they appear in the app on their own.
That is the difference between a demo and something a business can actually depend on, and it is the part most people never see.
What I Build
Real tools that solve real problems in your business
Web & Phone Apps
Tools your team opens in any browser, on any phone, tablet, or computer. No app store, no downloads, no per-device setup. Your staff just open a link and get to work.
Business Automation
The repetitive manual steps that eat your team's day, turned into something that runs on its own. Stop copying data between tools by hand and stop depending on the one person who remembers the process.
Device & Hardware Control
Software that drives real equipment: video walls, displays, networks, and connected devices. If it has a screen or a signal, there is usually a way to put it under your control.
Internal Tools & Dashboards
See your business at a glance instead of digging through five systems. Custom dashboards and internal tools that show you exactly what you need, the way you want to see it.
Integrations
Make the tools you already pay for talk to each other. Connect your systems so information flows automatically instead of being re-entered by hand three times.
Fixes & Upgrades
Already have something custom that is half-finished, buggy, or abandoned by whoever built it? I can take it over, fix it, and keep it running.
Why Have It Built Instead of Bought
- You own it outright. No monthly license holding your business hostage, no vendor that can raise the price or shut the doors. You pay for the work and the result is yours.
- It fits how you actually work. Not a template you bend your business around. Built from your real process, so it feels obvious to use from day one.
- One accountable person, not a ticket queue. I design it, I build it, I deploy it, and I am the one who answers when you need something. Over 20 years of commercial technology experience behind every project.
- It ships, and it keeps running. The Bartels wall loops all day and comes back on its own after a power cut. Real software that works unattended, not a demo that falls over the first week.
And here is the honest part: custom is not always the answer. If there is an off-the-shelf product that genuinely fits what you need, I will tell you to buy it and save your money. I only build custom when it will actually serve you better. That is the whole point.
How It Works
Talk It Through
We start with the actual problem and how your business really runs. No jargon. I listen first, then tell you honestly whether custom software is even the right call.
Plan & Quote
A clear scope and a clear price before any work begins. You know exactly what you are getting and what it costs, with no surprises.
Build & Show
I build it and show you working pieces early, so you are never waiting in the dark wondering what you will get. You give feedback as it takes shape.
Deploy & Support
I get it running in your business and I stay reachable. Most systems I can monitor and update remotely, so issues get handled fast.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about custom software development
What kind of software can you build?
Web apps that run in any browser, phone-friendly tools your staff open without an app store, business automation that removes repetitive manual steps, internal dashboards, integrations that make your existing tools talk to each other, and software that controls real equipment like displays, networks, and sensors. If it runs on a computer and solves a real problem in your business, it is likely something I can build.
Do I need to be technical to work with you?
No. You bring the problem and how your business works day to day. I handle everything technical and explain the parts you care about in plain English. My clients include business owners and staff with no computer background at all.
Will it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. I build most tools as web apps that work on any phone, tablet, or computer with a browser, with no app store download and no per-device setup. Your staff just open a link and use it.
Do I own the software when it is done?
Yes. You own what I build for you. There is no monthly license holding your business hostage and no vendor lock-in. You pay for the work, and the result is yours.
How much does custom software cost?
It depends entirely on what you need. A small automation or internal tool is a modest project. A full custom application is larger. I give a clear scope and a clear price before any work begins, and I will tell you honestly if an off-the-shelf product would serve you better and cheaper.
What happens if something breaks later?
I am the one person who built it, so I am the one person who fixes it. No ticket queue, no offshore handoff. I can monitor and update most systems remotely, so problems get handled fast without a site visit.
Have a Problem Software Could Solve?
Tell me what is slowing your business down. If custom software is the right fix, I will build it. If it is not, I will tell you that too. Serving San Francisco and the Bay Area, and remote projects anywhere.
